Call for Leadership

GPSA needs creative and dedicated leaders like you!

The Graduate & Professional Student Association (GPSA) is the official student government that represents all ASU graduate and professional students. GPSA is looking for graduate students to fulfill leadership positions for the 2016-2017 academic year. This is an excellent opportunity to develop and apply professional skills, build your CV, and serve fellow graduate students.

The director positions:

  • Position is from July 1, 2016 through May 15, 2017*
  • Require a 5-10hr/week commitment, both in-person and independent work
  • Report directly to GPSA’s elected leadership
  • Are accompanied by a $5,000 scholarship ($2,500/semester)

*May be required to have transition meetings before the position officially begins

To apply, you must be a graduate/professional student at ASU and enrolled in at least one unit of graduate student study during the fall and spring semesters.

Step One:  Leadership Call Form:  Fill out the Leadership Call form.  This may be filled out more than once, as needed.

Step Two:  Please email your CV and a letter of interest to the person specified for the position in which you are interested. Please indicate for which position you would like to be considered. You can apply to more than one position.  However, for each position, you should submit a cover letter addressing your interest, qualifications, and why you’d be a great fit. 

While all applicants will be considered, only the best matches will be interviewed.

Step Three: Interviews.  The GPSA executive will narrow down the pool of applicants to an interview pool.  These interviews will occur between May 24, 2016 and June 15, 2016.

Office of the President

Director of Marketing

This position oversees GPSA’s external communications and public relations. Required duties include designing  a marketing plan, marketing materials, facilitating assessment of events and programs, collaborating with Campus Outreach Directors to streamline marketing across all locations, and working closely with the Director of Communications to develop data-based strategies for developing advertising efforts.

Ideal candidates should be: organized, accessible, initiative taking, familiar with diverse marketing strategies, collaborative, communicative, familiar with creating marketing materials (i.e., skills in graphic design, photoshop, and other softwares), and comfortable working with deadlines.

Director of Communications

This position oversees GPSA’s internal and external communications. Required duties include assisting with marketing efforts for all GPSA offices, managing GPSA social media sites, collaborating with Campus Outreach Directors to streamline communication across all campuses, recording budget transactions, and handling media requests.

Ideal candidates should be: organized, accessible, fast working, initiative taking, technologically savvy (especially with social media), collaborative, communicative, familiar with creating marketing materials (i.e., skills in graphic design, photoshop, and other softwares), and comfortable working with deadlines.

Director of Information Technology (IT)

This position maintains and regularly updates the GPSA website and other GPSA media sites, supports and helps coordinate GPSA’s public communication strategies, manages and oversees GPSA’s regular newsletters and GRADAD advertising system, and reports directly to the GPSA President.

Ideal candidates should be: organized, accessible, fast working, autonomous, incredibly technologically savvy, comfortable working with deadlines, collaborative and communicative. Candidate should have skills in website development and management.

Director of International Student Concerns

This position exists to advocate on behalf of international students. This position acts as a liaison between the GPSA External Affairs Committee, the GPSA International Students Committee, and other parties external to GPSA. This position requires regular meetings with the various entities involved in addressing international student needs, and collaborating with other GPSA offices to include international students in programming, event planning, and other initiatives.

Ideal candidates should be: organized, communicative, innovative, passionate about international student issues and advocacy, comfortable working within a team (internal and external to GPSA), and a good negotiator. Having event planning or programming experience is a plus.

Outreach Directors (2 positions)

*1 Director for the Downtown & West campuses

*1 Director for the Tempe & Polytechnic campuses

These positions act as liaisons between GPSA and graduate students at their prospective campuses. These positions require planning events that engage students on their campuses, attending weekly meetings held by graduate student organizations and other ASU entities to promote GPSA programs and activities and assess graduate students needs, working with the Director of Communications in marketing efforts, and regularly visit the Graduate Student Centers. A travel budget to visit each campus is included.

Ideal candidates should be: extremely comfortable working autonomously, able to visit the Graduate Student Centers (GSCs) on both of their campuses on a weekly basis, active members of their campuses as well as invested in ASU pride, and familiar with event planning.

Director of Wellness

This position is dedicated to GPSA’s continued outreach and advocacy related to wellness topics (e.g., sexual violence, mental health, exercise, health concerns, etc). This position will engage in original programming around wellness issues, liaise between GPSA and other areas of the university (i.e. Health Services, ASU Wellness, Counseling Services, Office of Graduate Education) to represent graduate student concerns as related to wellness issues, and also outreach to wellness-related graduate student organizations (GSOs) and graduate departments/programs to support wellness-related initiatives.

Ideal candidates should be: collaborative, initiative-taking, organized, communicative, familiar with health and wellness issues, and passionate about wellbeing.

Office of the Assembly President

Assembly President Pro Tempore

***Applicants do not need to be a member of the Assembly to apply***

This position organizes and leads the monthly Graduate Student Organization (GSO) funding cycles as well as facilitates the Assembly Operations committee. This position regularly communicates with GSO leaders and is responsible for collecting, maintaining, and distributing application materials, funding reports, and funding policies. The Pro Tempore also leads the GPSA Assembly meetings when the GPSA Assembly President is absent and coordinates additions and modifications to the Assembly portion of the GPSA website.

Ideal candidates should be: well organized, able to respond quickly and professionally to emails, have good meeting management skills, a basic working knowledge of spreadsheets and web-based collaboration tools, and be comfortable managing monthly deadlines.

Assembly Parliamentarian/Secretary

***Applicants do not need to be a member of the Assembly to apply***

This position prepares the meeting minutes, reports, and legislation for Assembly meetings including taking detailed notes which are distributed to the Assembly and webmaster.  This leader serves as the Chair of the Government Operations Committee, which is responsible for interpretation and maintenance of the GPSA Constitution and ByLaws, and is an expert in regards to Robert’s Rules of Order, so as to help facilitate the monthly Assembly meetings.  Additionally, the Parliamentarian/Secretary collects data on the involvement of individual Assembly Members, developing and implementing member expectations, and organizes a member appreciation program. Required duties include: recording and distributing GPSA minutes and bills, recording changes to GPSA Assembly legislation, and facilitating monthly GPSA Assembly meetings.

Ideal candidates should be: someone with strong organizational and computer skills, have a good working knowledge of Robert’s Rules of Order and attention to legal detail, and be comfortable managing communication deadlines.

Office of the Vice President of Professional Development

Director of Events

This position is responsible for planning social and assisting with professional development events for all graduate students throughout the academic year (e.g., Welcome Week, Graduate Appreciation Week, Professional Development series, etc). This position requires scouting for venues, negotiating costs, ordering refreshments, recruiting volunteers, staying within designated budgets, and working with the Director of Communications to market events.

Ideal candidates should be: enthusiastic, organized, a good negotiator, comfortable with local venues and possibly have prior connections, collaborative, and experienced with planning events.

Director of Awards

This position will be responsible for the execution of the following GPSA Awards: Centennial Professor Award, Teaching Excellence Program (TEA), Outstanding Mentor Award, and Advocacy Award. The Director also is responsible for assisting with professional development events for all graduate students throughout the academic year.  Required duties include advertising these programs to graduate and professional students, recruiting, training, and managing reviewers, announcing winners, and compiling reports and data. As a member of the Professional Development office, this position will also collaborate to plan social and professional development events.

Ideal candidates should be: organized, technologically savvy (will be working with a grant management system), comfortable with marketing and working with people, and very collaborative.

Office of the Vice President of Internal Affairs

Director of Research

This position will be responsible for the execution of the following GPSA Research Grants: Graduate Research Student Program (GRSP), JumpStart Program, and the Athletics Research Grant Program. Required duties include advertising these programs to graduate and professional students; recruiting, training, and managing reviewers; announcing winners; and compiling reports and data.

Ideal candidates should: be research-oriented and possess research skills (e.g., compiling and analyzing data), be organized, technologically savvy (will be working with a grant management system), and willing to work well within a team. Ideal candidates should also have good written and oral communication skills.

Director of Travel

This position will be responsible for the execution of the GPSA Travel Grant Program (i.e., individual, group, internship, interview). This is the largest GPSA program. Required duties include advertising these programs to graduate and professional students; recruiting, training, and managing reviewers; announcing winners; and compiling reports and data.

Ideal candidates should: be research-oriented and possess research skills (e.g., compiling and analyzing data), be organized, technologically savvy (will be working with a grant management system), and willing to work well within a team. Ideal candidates should also have good written and oral communication skills.

Office of the Vice President of External Affairs

Director of Advocacy

This position will develop, implement and support GPSA civic engagement projects and advocacy agenda, and research university system policies of relevance that impact graduate students at ASU. Required duties also include meeting individually with students and student organizations as an advocacy consultant to share resources, empower them and collaborate on lobbying efforts.

The ideal candidate should be: organized, autonomous, interested in policy-making processes, knowledgeable and passionate about issues affecting graduate students, flexible, comfortable with leadership, culturally sensitive, and collaborative.

Director of Legislative Affairs

This position will design and carry out GPSA civic engagement projects, research state and federal legislation of relevance to graduate students, and advance GPSA’s legislative interests. Required duties include attending various local, statewide, and federal conferences and mobilizing students around important issues.

The ideal candidate should be:  organized, autonomous, interested in policy-making processes, knowledgeable and passionate about issues affecting graduate students, flexible, comfortable with leadership, culturally sensitive, and collaborative.
